Crews still assessing fire damage at Portage Elementary School

CAMBRIA COUNTY, Pa. —

The Portage Area School District canceled all classes Tuesday after an overnight fire at a Cambria County elementary school.

The fire on the roof of Portage Elementary School was spotted around 2:30 a.m. by a janitor. Crews were already at the scene of a chimney fire in Wilmore when the call came in.

Fire crews from all around the area responded and made quick work of containing the fire to the roof area.

The district superintendent 6 News that classes district-wide were canceled because of busing issues and the impending winter storm.

The cause of the fire was not known as of noon and officials are still assessing the extent of damage.
