Postmaster General Looking At Shorter Delivery Week

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. —

Postal carriers walk their mail routes each day in order to bring us mail six days a week, but it might soon drop to five days.

Postmaster General John Potter is asking Congress to put an end to the required six-day delivery week to focus on a $2.8 billion deficit created by dwindling mail volume and rising costs.

Last year, mail volume declined by 9.5 billion pieces.

Manager of Customer Relations Denise Marquis said jobs haven't been cut in the Erie district, which includes State College and Johnstown.

"We may be changing hours or in regards to carriers, we will look at their routes, see what the mail volume is and then adjust it accordingly, so as the mail volume decreases, they may have more deliveries on their route," said Marquis.

Right now the Postmaster General wants to suspend delivery on the lightest delivery days, something that Centre County resident Susan Halczenko says isn't such a bad idea.

"I can understand that, I can remember many years ago when I was a child they had two days of delivery,” Halczenko said.

The decision is ultimately up to the postal governing board.
