Power companies call workers off vacation to prepare for winter storm

By Maria Miller and  WJAC Web Staff

Heavy snow, wind and a wintry mix are causing some power outages according to Penelec officials.

Just before 5 p.m. Wednesday, 68 customers in Clearfield County were experiencing outages.

Some may consider this snow as a bit of an extra holiday gift as a chance to spend more time inside at home with their families, but for employees of Penelec, they're going to be working overtime whether they want to or not.

“We will call in anybody who is on vacation and bring them off of vacation to help with the restoration,” said Penelec spokesman Scott Surgeoner.

Penelec and its parent company First Energy said it's prepared to go into storm mode at any moment.

“We continue to monitor the weather,” Surgeoner said, “We do have two full-time meteorologists on our staff.  They have been providing forecasts for the past several days and will continue.”

The snow started falling early Wednesday morning and continued throughout the day. Even with the holidays, Penelec said it's staffed and ready for whatever storm mother nature decides to bring, working shifts of 16 hours.

Penelec said they'll stay out until power is restored to the very last customer.
