Program Battles Obesity

Cambria County —

The KidShape Program takes place at Conemaugh Valley Elementary School. The program is for both kids and their parents. Tuesday night was the first night and kids said they like it.

By now, we may think we know about the problems childhood obesity causes, but do we really know?

"Some kids in my grade are making fun of my weight and I'm really sad about that," says eight-year-old Brendan Appley.

"I just want to lose some weight because I really want them to stop making fun of me cause it hurts. It really does," says Brendan.

He isn't the only one.

"I think I'm kinda out of shape, so I decided to try this because I thought it'd be fun," says eleven-year-old Stephen Lugar.

KidShape helps these kids develop healthy behavior changes like eating healthy and exercising.

"My goal is to become more active and lower my weight," says Stephen.

The best part is it builds self-esteem.

"I used to agree with them, that I'm way over weight. But now, this is my first class and since I took it, I really feel I can change myself. It's possible," says Brendan.

Sure, these kids are overweight, but they are young and the decisions they make now are going to help them become successful in the future.

"I really like football and when I grow up, I want to be a pro-player for the Packers. The Packers are my team," adds Brendan.

KidShape works with kids from ages eight to 14. They are still accepting participants. If you would like more information call 814-534-9874.
