Program Removes Acid Mine Drainage From Elk County Waterways

JONES TOWNSHIP, Pa. —

For years, East Branch Clarion River Lake was known as the "Dead Sea" of Elk County.

Now, state and local officials are working to remove the acid mine drainage that damaged the lake.

Officials showcased a silo, Thursday, on Swamp Creek that uses lime to neutralize the mine drainage.

Several other similar facilities are used across the Clarion River watershed.

Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission officials said the cleanup isn't limited to the Clarion watershed.

"We now have clean rivers from here to Pittsburgh," said William J. Sabatose.
