Property Tax Reform

Johnstown —

Channel 6 News spoke with the governor about property tax reform and how close we are to seeing it pass. He tells us that the problem so far has been that both the House and the Senate have passed two versions of the bill and must now agree on one. He says he hopes the final bill includes four elements, property tax reduction from gambling money, tax shifting, and referendums that would allow local voters to reduce property taxes by raising income tax. The other referendum would prevent school districts from raising property tax without voter approval.

"I think there is a resoluteness to get this done at a level I haven't seen before. I am confident we will get something done," says Rendell.

A hearing on property tax reform is scheduled for January 4th. Rendell says he believes they will have a comprehensive bill by the end of that month.
