Proposed Federal Law Would Remove All Junk Foods From Schools

Federal Funding For School Lunches Expected To Increase; Bill Could Pass Friday

Senate bill that would provided $4.5 billion for healthier school lunch programs could become law soon.

The bill would require schools to get rid of all junk foods, even in vending machines. It would also increase the nation's school lunch program and require school districts to serve healthier foods.

Like many school districts in the Alleghenies, Johnstown has already taken this step, and school administrators said they're already seeing improvements. Superintendent Barbara Perkins said since making menu changes, test scores are up.

Perkins said the federal law won't entirely affect what is served in school cafeterias. Currently, students will still find foods like pizza and sloppy joes, but the ingredients have changed to low-fat dairy products and whole-grains. In Johnstown, schools are also offering different kinds of fruits and vegetables that most kids won't find at home.

If the bill passes on Friday, money will be taken for from the Federal Food Stamps Program to help pay for the changes, Perkins said. She further said she hopes children will bring the healthy eating habits they learn at school home with them.
