PSU Faith Center opens

By Rich Wisniewski

STATE COLLEGE, Pa —

It took almost a full decade of planning and two years of construction, but as fate would have it, it all came together for Suzanne Pohland Paterno Faith Center located right across from the Penn State University campus.

"It's incredible, it exceeded all of my expectations coming into today," said Mitchell Shuck, a Penn State student.

The service started with a blessing of the holy water and as the time went on, more and more people were squeezing into the area to be a part of the first Mass as Sue Paterno sat right in the front row.

"It's too bad we didn't have more room for them," said Paterno.

Sue and her late husband, Joe Paterno, raised $6.5 million for the building. Paterno said she wanted to do it so the university's Catholic students can have a place of faith.

"Now we have a permanent home where the Catholic students can have all the Catholic artifacts, the Catholic library and a place to be all the time," she said.

Paterno added that her husband would have been thrilled with the final product. She said that even though her husband spent most of his time on the football field, they both worked together as a team in this project.

"We did everything in life as a team. ... I didn't coach, but he never cooked either," she said, smiling.

Paterno said the faith center is everything she could have wanted, and she hopes that students find it as a place to go when they need those answers that a book can't always provide.
