University officials said the 20-year-old student was taken to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville where he is in critical condition.

The student lived at the Alpha Chi Rho fraternity house and members of that fraternity have been asked to get medical treatment as a precaution.

So far, 40 people have received treatment.

Students are encouraged to get vaccinated against bacterial meningitis. Anyone who needs vaccinated is asked to call 814-863-0774.

Univerisity officials are cautioning students that meningitis is commonly misdiagnosed. Symptoms include fever, severe headache, stiff neck and sensitivity to lights.

Bacterial meningitis is very contagious but it is not spread through routine contact. It can be spread through saliva other prolonged contact and sharing utensils, drink containers or toothbrushes.
