PSU Students React to Trophy Return

By Rich Wisniewski

State College, Pa —

For many of the Penn State Football players who were a member of the team that won a bowl game from 1998 to 2011, the feeling of holding up the trophy is one that they will probably never forget. It was a moment that showed how hard work, dedication and teamwork can pay off. However, in the eyes of the NCAA that moment the players shared never happened.

"To take something physical away like a trophy that was actually like earned and the players went through a whole season to get that and they held it up at the end of the game and to have something to show for it...to take that away is ridiculous," said PSU freshman Robert Nese.

Nese is not only a PSU student but he also grew up in State College. He was shocked to learn Wednesday that PSU will have to return their tropheys from bowl games they won from 1998 until last year. But even though they games may be wiped away from the records, Nese knows they happened, because he watched them.

"It was just nice to see them win all these games and even if they were to take all these trophies away, I still know that they won and I got to see them play," he said.

This afternoon, someone from the Alamo Bowl spoke to six news. The Lions won the Alamo Bowl in 1999 and 2007. However, a representative from the Alamo Bowl says that as of now those games have been vacated, so as far as they are concerned, the Alamo Bowl in 99 and 07 were never played.  As for the trophys, they say they haven't asked Penn State for them, nor has the NCAA asked the Alamo Bowl to ask Penn State for them.

"Its more affecting those players who played in those games, so it hurts them more than anyone else," said freshman Connor Cunningham.

The trophys used to be on display in the Lasch Building, where the Lions Practice. But after the Sandusky trial in June the building was redesigned and the trophies were taken down and put into storage and as Coach O'Brien continued his theme of moving the team forward, he chose to not put the trophies back up. But given the new direction of the team, the fans are still on board.

"I'm gonna buy seasons tickets every year, and I'm gonna go to every game," added Cunningham.
