Public Hearing on Future of Centre Crest

By Stef Davis

STATE COLLEGE, Pa

Dozens of people packing in to the State College borough building Wednesday evening for a public hearing on the future of Centre Crest--Centre County’s nursing home.

Carol English, Centre County Office of Aging, says, "For years I’ve told my friends if i ever need nursing care that’s exactly where I’m going."

Everyone in the crowd in support of Centre Crest, but mixed thoughts on who should own and operate it. Right now, the county runs the nursing home in the red-- losing 1.3 million dollars last year alone. The commissioners suggest turning the home into a public non-profit. But some staunchly disagree.

Jon Eich, former Centre County Commissioner, says, "Only continued ownership, operation, and control of Centre Crest by county government can ensure availability at Centre Crest."

Others open to a change, but with questions.

Jackie Babcock, mother lives at Centre Crest, says, "Is there anything you're looking at to guarantee these wonderful people can maintain employment there?"

And while feelings are mixed, one thing remains agreed up across the board. Centre Crest is a valuable and irreplaceable asset to people in Centre County.
