Public Upset over Sale of Old Philipsburg Police Weapons

By Stef Davis

PHILIPSBURG, Pa

Lots of finger pointing and confusion at the Philipsburg council meeting. But here's what everyone agrees on.--old Philipsburg police department weapons were sold off in the last few weeks. But the way they were sold has members of borough council telling two very different stories. And the public wants answers.

Barbara Jet, council member, addresses council President Fred Grauch, “You have violated the public trust to the nth degree when you did that!"

Tense moments at the Philipsburg borough council meeting Monday night. The debate-- over how old borough police department weapons were sold.

Sharon Goss, Philipsburg, says, “I’m very upset because they aren't following the law and that seems to be the issue and the way things have been handled."

Members of the public accusing council President Fred Grauch and borough manager Jan McDonald of selling off those guns without approval from council. Grauch himself owns a gun shop. Grauch says that isn't the case.

Grauch says, “I do believe this council made a motion and passed it to sell the guns and gave that directive to the borough manager."

But people in the audience and other members of council say that never happened.

Betsy Ross, Philipsburg, says, “There was no meeting. There was no vote taken. I'm not sure the people that he was selling the weapons to should even have them in their possession.”

The council president did say that his gun shop was the one who facilitated the sale, though he himself did not sell the weapons.

Betsey Ross adds, "I do believe the state police should be brought into this. There should be questions asked. There are rules regulating this. Our president should not be involved in this. He did bring his business into this.”
