Punxsutawney municipal airport hoping to get more airport traffic

By Brittany Boyer

PUNXSUTAWNEY, Pa. —

The Punxsutawney Municipal Airport has been a part of the community for several decades.

The airport was first known as the Grube Airport which first began services in 1929.

By the 1940's the airport was renamed the Punxsutawney Municipal Airport.

The airport sits in a rural area in Bell Township,  a short distance from Route 119.

The airport does not have commercial flights.

Larry Straitiff, the flight instructor at the airport has been teaching people how to fly for more than 10 years.

In an effort to help gain more awareness about the airport and the services it provides, an event will be held this weekend.

The 14th annual Airport Awareness Day will be held on Sunday.

Straitiff said that with the downturn in the economy the airport is not seeing as much traffic as it should be.

Straitiff said this event will allow people to see what the airport has to offer.

There will be numerous aircraft on display including military aircraft and The Pennsylvania State police helicopter.

The event is free except for anyone that is interested in taking a ride in a small plane.

The event will be held on Sunday at 10 a.m.

In the event it rains a rain date has been scheduled for Sept. 30.
