Punxsutawney School Board Votes Against Closing Schools

PUNXSUTAWNEY, Pa. —

The future of two elementary schools was on the line Wednesday night in Punxsutawney.

The school board heard from several residents, who expressed their concerns on eliminating Mary A. Wilson and Mapleview elementaries.

The issue became a grass-roots battle for residents.

"We have parents and grandparents here, trying to save these schools," said Tim Burkett.

In the end, the board voted against closing both of the schools.

District officials said they aren't sure where the issue will go from here, and added that the district must find a way to deal with declining enrollment.
