Punxsutawney School District Proactive In Bullying Prevention

By Brittany Boyer

PUNXSUTAWNEY,Pa. —

Wednesday night a concerned parent addressed the Punxsutawney school board at its committee meeting. Georgette Pennington, the mother of a Punxsutawney high school student told the board that her daughter was being bullied.

Pennington also added that there is a growing drug problem in the school, and that the district should look into hiring a school resource officer.

Punxsutawney Area School District superintendent, Dr.Keith Wolfe told 6 News that he believes bullying is going on everywhere.

"In any school district, I believe there is bullying that happens. It's not just in school districts, bullying happens," said Wolfe.

Pennington believes that the district should be doing more.

"The school district needs to come together with our police department to help with this," said Pennington.

"Every time we have needed the police officers from the borough, they are here. They respond very well to us," said Wolfe.

Wolfe believes having a resource officer would be beneficial for the district.  However, with state budget cuts they may not have the money to do it.

"It is very tough to say, 'lets add something else, we're going to take away three teachers, but we're going to add a police officer,'"said Wolfe.

In an effort to help put an end to bullying, the district has participated in the Olweus bullying program. Wolfe said that it has proven to be beneficial, however, he believes there is no black and white solution to prevent bullying.

"I think we're very proactive about it, but there is no magic pill that is going to make bullying go away," said Wolfe.
