Red Cross Strike Ends

While a strike by Red Cross workers may be coming to and end, the contract dispute continues. Union members have been working under a contract extension since December and they walked off the job Sunday.

Most of the workers said they are planning to return to work, but a day later than originally planned.

Less than a dozen blood mobile and blood bank workers are going back to work Wednesday, but the bulk of the union will return Thursday.

Union workers told Red Cross leaders they wanted to work Wednesday, but 12 blood drives set for that day were already canceled, therefore, it wasn't necessary for workers to return all at once.

Seven blood drives are still set to happen, but non-union workers are to handle those events. It's unclear what returning union workers will be assisgned to do at this point.

Members of Communications Workers of America Local 1300 went on strike because they want to keep their existing health insurance plan. Red Cross leaders want to change it to save money and, so far, the two groups have been unable to reach an agreement.

Though all 160 CWA workers plan to return to work Thursday, they still don't have a contract.

There's no word when union workers will sit back down with the Red Cross to negotiate.
