Rendell Declares Disaster Areas

Bedford —

There is no doubt many of the state's eastern communities saw massive damage from this week's storms. While places like Bedford did see plenty of high water, is it really enough to call it a disaster area? According to emergency officials the answer is simple. It all comes down to paper work. Even though the damage is not that extensive in Bedford, Blair, Huntingdon, Jefferson, Indiana, and Centre Counties, the disaster declaration allows them to apply for state funding if storm damage is found later on. If another storm hits, that does cause serious flooding, the declaration will protect the counties in that instance as well. Also, officials say the Susquehanna River can take two to three days to back up after a heavy rainstorm. At this point they are not expecting any more flooding. The disaster declaration is simply a precaution.
