Residents Comment On Future Of Elk County's Powdered Metal Industry

ST. MARYS, Pa. —

It was once known as the powdered metal capital of the world.

You don't have to look far to see powdered metal plants around St. Marys.

They still dot the hills around city and fill the area's industrial park.

The powdered metal industry was hit hard by the recent recession.

The industry was also affected by the decline of the nation's automakers.

But according to residents, the industry is on its way back.

They said many plants who have cut workers are calling them back to the job.

On Wednesday, the CEO of one local powdered metal company spoke in Washington, D.C. about how his company made it through the recession.

Residents admit the county still has a long road out of the recession.

Unemployment still stands in double digits.

Many powered metal companies are still trying to diversify their businesses, and lessen depedence on the nation's automakers.
