Residents, Governor's Representative Meet To Discuss Acid Rock

Related

Opponents of a plan to haul acidic rock across four counties on local roads met with a representative from the governor's office today in hopes of convincing him to intervene.

Commissioners from Cambria and Indiana Counties and supervisors from Indiana County laid out their objections to hauling pyritic rock from the Skytop area of Centre County to the Strongstown area of Indiana County.

The plan calls for that acidic rock to be mixed with alkaline flyash from a power plant and placed in an old stripmine site.

The company that's applying for a state permit to haul the flyash to the dumpsite now says it will list several alternate routes to haul the flyash to the Strongstown dumpsite when it applies for its permits. That would mean trucks will be able to avoid a one-lane bridge in the village of Dilltown, something area residents were very upset about.

The Department of Environmental Protection is currently determining if the plan to dump acid rock from the Interstate 99 project meets environmental requirements.

PennDOT hopes to begin hauling the acid rock from Skytop this summer. If that happens, officials believe they will be able to finish the clean up around the same time next year.

The I-99 project is a highway designed to link this region to Philadelphia and started nearly two decades ago.
