Residents In Blair County Take Amish Neighbors To Court

TYRONE, Pa. —

An Amish family in Blair County has created quite a stir.

On Tuesday, about seven homeowners in the Sinking Valley area of Tyrone took their Amish neighbors to court. They said they could no longer stand all the noise.

"You can't even open a window to sleep at night because of the dogs barking or early-morning noises," said homeowner Rex Mauk.

Mauk said their community was a peaceful place until the Hostetler family started a sawmill, a furniture store, and a dog kennel right in their back yards.

He said he's tried to talk to them before, but to little avail. Taking them to court was the last resort.

The Hostetlers argue that it's the first time they've heard this complaint. They said their neighbors turned them into DEP before, and they installed a dust bin at their sawmill. They said it generates a lot of noise. As for the dogs, the family said they only bark at feeding time.

The judge has yet to make a decision. He plans to visit the Hostetlers' sawmill, dog kennel, and furniture store to determine what should be done.
