Residents Move On After Fatal Fire

Senior Citizens Evacuated From Huntingdon Apartment Complex Hope To Move Home Soon

HUNTINGDON, Pa. —

Residents of the Deforrest Apartment complex in Huntingdon met with housing officials and emergency crews Wednesday, who said it could be some time before they can move back into their homes.

Officials said the first and second floors of the nine-story building received the brunt of the damage. They will require major cleanup. And elevators, fire alarms and sprinklers must be up and running before residents who live on the other floors can starting moving back in. Until then, emergency and Red Cross officials are making sure the residents have their medicines and other necessities.

"We need to do an assessment and we're moving ahead as quickly as we can from there," said the Director of Huntingdon Housing Authority Dawn Sunderland.

One resident died in the fire, 71-year-old Donna Jacobs. As residents deal with the loss they're staying at hotels or with their families, hoping to return home soon.

Officials said residents will be able to go into the building Thursday to pick up some clothes and personal belongings.

The fire is still under investigation.
