Residents Worried About Fire Proposal

DUNCANSVILLE, Pa. —

A local township is planning to make some changes to their fire emergency plan, but some residents say the changes could put their safety in jeopardy.

The Duncansville Fire Department has been Blair Township's primary fire service since 2006. When a resident reports a fire to 911, they're the first crew dispatched. But even for minor situations, 911 alerts all of the local volunteer fire companies.

However, township officials said they don't think that's necessary. They've proposed to have Duncansville be the only responder for minor calls, like when an automatic fire alarm or a smoke detector goes off.

Blair Township resident Rich Lasek said he is concerned because even a minor call could turn into a big problem fast. And moreover, there are other fire departments that are closer to some homes. Lasek said they shouldn't have to wait longer for a crews to arrive if there's an emergency.

The Duncansville fire chief said Blair Township conducted a study a few years ago that showed their response time is the fastest compared to other nearby companies.
