Richland Residents Fight Possible Tax Increase

CAMBRIA COUNTY, Pa. —

It was standing room only at the Richland Elementary School gym Monday night. Folks wanted to come out and her how the school board would defend a tax increase when the budget is balanced and they have $2 million in the bank.

The meeting started with a financial overview. The school board said because of ACT 1 and the way the state funds districts, they are at a disadvantage. Richland has high test scores and large community incomes. That means it likely won't get any money from Harrisburg in the future.

Some board members claim that will put the district into a crisis by 2011 and force them to cut programs and future improvements.

However, some people at the meeting said planning ahead or not, they can't afford an extra $40 a year for the proposed 2 mil tax hike.

"With a child in the district, I know there are expenses and those things do cost money," said Richland parent Barbara Misosky. "They need to be paid for somehow. I just don't think it's a good time right now. Economically it's a difficult time for everyone at this point."

Some senior citizens were also at the meeting talking about their fixed incomes and how the increase would hurt them.

There is still no word on whether a vote was made on the budget Monday night.
