Robbers Target Unusual Medical Equipment

Clearfield County —

One fiber-optic camera is missing from the DuBois Regional Medical Center, two are missing from Mount Nittany Medical Center in State College, and most recently four colonoscopes have turned up missing in Armstrong County. Colonoscopes are a type of endoscope, which are fiber-optic cameras inserted into body cavities to take live video pictures from inside.

So, what could robbers be doing with them? The scopes themselves are essentially useless, without the larger rack of video processing equipment that they hook into. Officials at KMA Remarketing, a firm that specializes in the repair and re-selling of used medical equipment, say that there is a huge market for endoscopes overseas, and that many are sold on the internet every day. Investigators in DuBois and State College say they don't have any solid leads on the thefts.
