Rockslide Closes Johnstown Road Again

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. —

For the second time in a month, a rockslide has closed Menoher Boulevard.

PennDOT crews said a newly installed fencing system designed to keep rocks off the road did work, but said the rockslide came down from another area. Crews said the fencing controlled a massive amount of rock by keeping them contained.

The roadway was closed Friday and crews said it could remain closed for some time. Crews said they will investigate further to determine if there was a moisture change beneath the surface that is causing slides to happen more frequently.

A contractor was expected to be at the scene Friday afternoon to begin cleanup.

Alternative routes to get downtown while avoiding Menoher Boulevard include taking Millcreek Road or following Franklin Street through the 8th Ward. To avoid Memorial Medical Center, drivers can take Ferndale Avenue to Valley Pike or Horner Street.
