Route 56 Bypass Shelved

Some Homeowners Relieved

When Johnstown's West End Bypass project was dropped from the Transportation Commission's 12 Year Plan, Johnstown's mayor was outraged, but not everybody is angry about it. Some homeowners are actually relieved to hear the 56 Bypass project is shelved and they don't want Mayor Zucco to do anything to get the project back.

Some living in the Coopersdale section of Johnstown are afraid their houses stand directly in the path of the proposed route. These are family homes with sentimental value. While some say the Route 56 Bypass would make their neighborhood safer, others say the new road would make their neighborhood more dangerous.

Coopersdale resident, Dwayne Ashcom says, "What am I going to do? Live with the noise? Worry about vehicles flying over, they land in my house. You never know what's going to happen. With that kind of highway, and the way they drive, the way these truck drivers drive, the way everyone drives, they're all in a hurry."

Now some residents are worried about the Transportation Summit Johnstown's mayor is planning. Mayor Zucco wants to find out how tens of millions of dollars worth of road projects slipped through the cracks...and he wants to get funding for the 56 Bypass project back to the city. Some living in Johnstown are worried about their property values dropping if the bypass runs near their house, and they say Mayor Zucco's time could be better spent.

Ashcom says, "Zucco should worry about the jobs than worrying about putting a bypass in. Bypass should be next after the jobs. Not a bypass before you get the jobs."

Zucco tells Channel 6, in order to bring more jobs to the area, Johnstown needs better roads - like that 56 Bypass.
