Route 56 Project

A major highway connecting Bedford, Somerset, and Cambria Counties could become a four lane.

Cambria County leaders say making Route 56 a four lane highway would benefit the economy - making travel easier to busy business districts. Johnstown's Mayor says the focus is both to the west to Route 22 -- and to the east toward the Turnpike.

Donato Zucco says, "There's been a study that's just been released on 56 east that shows about a 350 million dollar expenditure to create a four lane, modern access out to the turnpike and we're looking at how that could be done in phases."

Mayor Zucco says money for the project would come from state and federal funds.
