Route 56 Projects

PennDot Behind

It was published Tuesday, PennDot is behind on several projects on Route 56. Projects they planned to have completed in 2003, now might not even begin until 2007.

One of those projects on hold is the straightening of a dangerous curve in Bedford County. It's been the scene of dozens of deadly accidnts over the years and on Tuesday, Channel 6 cameras were rolling when yet another tractor trailer smashed into the guardrails.

The truck didn't make it around the Peggy Westover Curve in Bedford County. The driver of the truck was lucky as he walked away from the accident. The stretch of Route 56 has claimed the lives of dozens of drivers.

PennDot engineers refuse to begin work on teh curve until the $44 million price tag for the project is lowered, but it's accidents like Tuesdays that has drivers asking for the Peggy Westover Construction to be pushed to the front of the line of Route 56 projects before more vehicles and lives are lost.

The victim of Tuesday's accident says he's driven the road for years and he still fell victim to the dangerous turn.
