Rural Residents React To Congressman Murtha's Comments

ARMSTRONG COUNTY, Pa. —

Congressman John Murtha may have a fair amount of supporters in Johnstown, but is that the case around the rest of his district?

WJAC went to the outskirts of the 12 congressional district to see what people had to say about Murtha's controversial comments.

Murtha's comments about Western Pennsylvania being racist and redneck has not set well with a lot of people. However, others said the money he's brought in to places like Johnstown can't be ignored.

Johnstown sees a lot of money from defense contracts and businesses coming to the area. Murtha is responsible for helping companies such as CTC, KDH, JWF and Kuchera Defense Systems.

That may play a big role for local voters, but what about places like Apollo in Armstrong County WJAC went to the town and found it was covered in William Russell signs, Murtha's Republican competitor. Not one Murtha sign was spotted.

Armstrong County officials said they are pretty evenly matched when it comes to the number of Democrats and Republicans. However, Apollo Borough has significantly more Democrats.
