Save Money When Buying Backpacks

The new school year is right around the corner, and that means back-to-school shopping -- and picking a backpack that won't break the bank. Good Housekeeping put more than two dozen packs to the test to see which backpacks were the best buys.

"We looked at 29 backpacks and we evaluated them for fabric durability, water resistance, how much they held, and then we also had kids rate the packs," said Kathleen Huddy, textiles director, Good Housekeeping Institute.

North Face’s Borealis for $69 was "Head of the Class." It’s more expensive than some, but Good Housekeeping says it’s worth the extra money. "This bag did really well in the water resistance test. It even has a water resistance zipper, so when the rain comes down it won't get in. They even thought to put covers on the major zippers to protect from the rain, and they have a very highly organized section for all of your school supplies," said Huddy.

At $50, the Riff by Kelty was very popular with the kids because they liked the front adjustable straps, the dual water bottles, and the fact that it wasn't too big. Testers could put things in it without the bag overwhelming them.

Another winner, the Cordura StudyHaul by Lands End for $39.50, easily held 15 pounds of gear. Last year, American families spent an average of $560 for back to school supplies.
