School's Out, Except In Somerset

School's out for the summer. It's a phrase that every student loves to hear. Most area students have begun enjoying their summer except for kids in Somerset after a teachers' strike pushed back the last day of school. Students must now go until Wednesday, June 23rd. Some say it will hurt their chances of landing a summer job while some parents had to change their vacation plans. Parent Donald Ream says "we're gonna be done with our little league season in Somerset before school's even out. That sounds kind of odd, doesn't it?" Somerset's Superintendent Dr. John Baraniak says it's business as usual. He says teachers are cooperating, and they've had no major problem with student attendance. "I think for the most part students want to do well on finals and know this is part of their 180 day schedule. they realize even though some of their friends are out they still have this committment," says Baraniak. One concern for Baraniak is summer school. It starts July 6th less than two weeks after the end of the school year and goes right up to the start of sports camps this fall. In the meantime, the teachers union and school board have not returned to the bargaining table after the school board rejected an arbitrator's report.
