Sen. Wozniak Lays Out Plan For School Consolidation

State Sen. John Wozniak, from Johnstown, is laying out his plan to make school districts more efficient. The issue of consolidation has never been an easy topic, but he said it can no longer be ignored.

Tuesday, Wozniak introduced legislation that would create a school consolidation commission.

Recently, Gov. Ed Rendell proposed cutting the number of districts from 500 to 100. Wozniak said that much change may not be necessary. He wants the commission to be open-minded and do what's best for education and tax payer's dollars.

However, local school districts are already fighting the notion. In fact, Ferndale School District in Cambria County wrote an editorial dispelling rumors they are consolidating. Also, Rockwood School District in Somerset County recently took a vote opposing a consolidation feasibility study.

Wozniak said his plan will not close any schools that would not have eventually closed on their own because of declining enrollment trends.
