Hollidaysburg —
Tuesday morning both campaigns came out with their gloves on. Eichelberger defending his political career, Jubelirer attacking it.
Jubelirer has been campaigning that Eichelberger has a conflict of interest that keeps him from doing his job. It's his insurance company which he's owned for years. According to Jubelirer's camp, Eichelberger has had to abstain from 102 different county votes because of his business. Jubelirer also accuses him of using his position as a Blair County Commissioner to drum up business.
"Today we are calling on John Eichelberger to disclose the fees he has made over the past 11 years from peddling insurance to county contractors and pay it back to the tax payers to repay them for the job that he could not do," says Jim Gregory with the Jubelirer Campaign.
Eichelberger says he is well within his rights to own a business, and that abstaining from votes is the right thing to do when a conflict arises.
"It's never ever effected the counties ability to do business," he says. "It's never harmed anybody."
And now Eichelberger is turning the tables on his opponent, by attacking Jubelirer's law firm.
"His law firm has always been involved in many public projects and many private clients have received public funding and done business with the state of Pennsylvania," says Eichelberger. "To my knowledge he has not abstained in those matters, which I think warrants a criminal investigation."
Jubelirer's campaign says even though he does get a $20,000 a year stipend for owning the business, he has not practiced for 25 years. Eichelberger disputes that. One thing is for sure though, as we near the election day the mud slinging will likely get worse.
