Senator working to protect national memorials from sequester

By Kerri Corrado

Many historic places like Gettysburg, Yellowstone, the Washington Monument and even the Flight 93 Memorial in our own backyard, could experience funding cuts.

The President of the Families of Flight 93, Gordon Felt, is concerned because the memorial is a place of remembrance, but it could suffer due to the sequester.

One senator is asking Congress to protect access to these places.

U.S. Senator Tom Coburn says, “ President Obama has called on Congress to take action to avoid the harmful effects of the Sequestration. This amendment uses the administration’s own recommendations to reduce funding for lower-priority heritage areas and shift those funds to protect and restore access to the White House, our national parks, and monuments.”

Coburn is asking Congress to shift money, taking from things such as wine trains and Elvis cruises and shift it to landmarks such as Flight 93 memoria

“To us, this is much more than a memorial. It represents the final resting place for our loved ones,” Felt said.
