Seneca Resources converts drilling rigs to use Natural Gas

By Brittany Boyer

ELK COUNTY, Pa. —

A Pennsylvania oil and gas company has become the first in the state to successfully convert its drillings rigs to use natural gas.

Seneca Resources Corporation has converted two of its drilling rigs in Lycoming and Elk counties.

Instead of diesel fuel the company will use 100 percent liquified natural gas (LNG) to drill into the Marcellus Shale.

"We're bringing this product to market. We need to use this product as a country, and we want to set an example as Seneca Resources for using this product," said Rob Boulware, manager of stakeholder relations at Seneca Resources.

6 News is the only television station to get a look at the rig that is being fuel by LNG in Elk County.

The LNG fuel is supplied by Prometheus Energy.

According to the company, Prometheus Energy is one of the largest LNG suppliers in the industrial sector of North America.

According to the Prometheus Energy website, they have supplied LNG to more than 150 wells nationwide.

"The engine that we're running here is the only EPA certified natural gas engine in the country right now," said Boulware.

Currently, Ensign Energy Services is the drilling and equipment operator for Seneca Resources.

Company leaders told 6 News that using LNG will be quieter and cleaner for the environment.

"The sound of a natural gas drilling rig in general is a lot quieter than the diesel rig. The emissions that you have associated with the clean burning natural gas is so much better," Boulware said.

Studies show that by using natural gas, there is a significant reduction in carbon dioxide (CO2), volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and nitrogren oxide (NOX) compared to diesel.

Seneca Resources hopes that in the future they can use the natural gas produced from nearby wells.

"That ultimately is the goal, that this rig will run on gas that's drilled right here in this area, and this will support our drilling operations as we move forward," Boulware said.

Seneca Resources will also convert a third rig to use diesel or natural gas. It's expected to be converted during this fiscal year.
