Several families displaced by fast-moving fire

By Maria Miller

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. —

A devastating fire in Johnstown's Moxham section destroyed three buildings Thursday night, leaving about a dozen people without homes on Thanksgiving night.

"I came out of my driveway last night and I could see behind the one vacant house fire," said Wayne Coyle. "There was light and I heard crackling and everything."

Coyle lives across the street and was the first person to notice the flames. He called 911 and immediately started pounding on doors to get his neighbors to safety. One couple in particular was already fast asleep.

"I had to beat on the door. I was considering kicking the door down because I knew they were home because their family was over there for Thanksgiving," said Coyle. "I walked off the porch and I'm thinking, 'What do I do?' and then the porch light came onso I was pretty happy to see them."

It was a massive fire with flames that could be seen for miles. Officials said the fire started in a vacant home and quickly spread to another building as well as an apartment building where 10 people were living.

Firefighters worked quickly and were able to contain most of the flames. Two nearby homes remained standing as of Friday, but one of the homes received so much water damage, the family who lives inside said it's no longer inhabitable.

There's no word yet on a cause. Neighbors told 6 News it appears suspicious. A fire marshal was on
scene Friday morning. Investigators said there's just a lot they need to look into before they can determine whether the fire was intentionally set.

Neighbors are already organizing to lend a helping hand to the families who lost everything in the blaze. The group is called Second Chance Fire Recovery of Cambria County. Through their Facebook page, they're collecting food and clothes for the people who lost everything.

Anyone who wishes to donate can call 814-535-8524 or visit the groupp's Facebook page.
