Friday marked the official start of winter, and it’s packing a snowy punch for much of the 6 News viewing area.

In Somerset County, a winter storm warning is in effect until 7 p.m. Saturday.

A winter storm warning means heavy snow is forecast that will make travel dangerous. The National Weather Service said there is the potential for near-blizzard conditions at times, with heavy falling and blowing snow Friday afternoon into Saturday. Near-zero visibility, snow- and ice-covered roads and wind chills in the single digits to teens are likely.

A winter weather advisory is in effect for much of northern Pennsylvania down through the central mountains. The advisory is in also in effect until 7 p.m. Saturday.

The winter weather advisory includes numerous counties, including Bedford, Blair, Cambria, Centre, Clearfield and Cameron.

A winter weather advisory for snow means a significant amount of snow is forecast. Snow-covered roads and low visibilities will cause hazardous travel conditions, the Weather Service said.

People who must travel should keep an extra flashlight, food, blanket and a cellphone in their vehicle in case of an emergency.
