Shade Twp. police investigating rash of burglaries, reminding residents to lock doors

By Maria Miller

SHADE TOWNSHIP, Pa. —

A rash of car break-ins has residents in one local community on edge.

"The people are discovering things missing days later, some of the stuff we're finding along the edges of the roads," said Holland. "It seems like they're strictly after money."

A file on Shade Township Police Chief Tom Holland's desk is filled with burglary reports; 43 cases to be exact.

"They're hitting all areas of Shade Township," said Holland. "They hit Cairnbrook first, then they went to Bunker Hill and then they went to Shaffer Mountain."

Since the end of August, Holland says he's received a steady stream of calls from people whose cars have been broken into. And now he said the burglars have started targeting homes.

"I feel it's drug-related," said Holland. "The need for money to buy their drugs and that."

Police don't have any suspects, but they said whoever is involved knows what they're doing.

"Some of these places, there's dogs laying right there on the porch, and they're not even alerting owners there's a stranger in the yard," said Holland. "No one's hearing nothing."

Still, Holland said there could be a simple fix for some.

"Why do you want to let your purse with wallet and credit cards laying there on the console?" said Holland. "Why aren't you keeping your vehicles locked?"

Police said they believe there is more than one person involved in the burglaries. Anyone with information should give police a call. In the meantime, residents should lock their doors and keep valuables out of sight.
