Shanksville Superintendent Retires

One person who knows all to well the effects the crash of Flight 93 had on the small town of Shanksville is Gary Singel. But now the superintendent of Shanksville Stonycreek Township School District has decided to retire. Gary Singel has served as superintendent for 22 years. "It's just time to move on and do something else a little differently," says Singel. He considers improvements to curriculum and technology his greatest accomplishments and says the biggest visual change to the school is a massive addition that doubled the school's size. But it was the crash of Flight 93 that brought the most notoriety. "The world showed up on our doorstep and we were no longer this quiet little community that could not be affected by the rest of the world," commented Singel from his office in Shanksville. But he believes the crash had a silver lining. He says it revitalized Shanksville's traditional values to the benefit of his students. But even after guiding the school through the most turbulent time in its history, Singel still sees room for improvement. "I don't have any regrets, but to say I finished everything there is to finish, I think is a stretch because there's always something not quite finished." Singel says he's considering several new options and hopes to make a decision on his next move in about a month.
