Sheriff To Challenge Cambria County Job Cut

Related

The Cambria County sheriff said he will challenge part of the county’s 2009 budget in court.

Commissioners passed the budget Monday and cut several jobs, including a full-time deputy sheriff. Sherriff Bob Kolar said the department cannot protect residents effectively without that position, and said he will take that decision to court.

About 20 other county positions were also eliminated in the budget.

Over a week ago, the County Salary Board was deadlocked when they voted on the layoffs. Monday, the layoffs were approved 3-2.

Commissioners announced their budget plans earlier this month and admitted they had a tough time putting it together. They said rising medical and retirement costs, as well as loan payments to pay off Laurel Crest nursing home’s debts, forced them to make cuts.

Kolar said he is gathering paperwork and will file court documents this week. Stay with WJAC-TV News and WJACTV.com for continuing coverage.
