RICHLAND TOWNSHIP, Pa. —

A gunman, now identified as 45-year-old Kevin McGee of Johnstown, was shot and wounded by police after he opened fire in a Cambria County Police Department parking lot on Thursday, said Cambria County District Attorney Kelly Callihan.

Callihan said McGee, armed with a shotgun, opened fire in the parking lot of the police department at the Richland Township Municipal Building just after 10:30 a.m. The township police department is in the rear of the building.

A gunshot went through the window of a Richland police cruiser parked in the lot, which officers witnessed from a window inside the municipal building.

Callihan said Richland Township police officers then took steps to contain the situation and every precaution was taken to secure the area, including nearby schools.

The gunman was shot by police in the parking lot and transported by ambulance to Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center, where he underwent surgery.

Pennsylvania State Police have been called in to investigate the incident, which is proper procedure because Richland police used force to contain a situation.

For much of the afternoon and into the early evening, the parking lot and Schoolhouse Road in the front of the police station were closed.

Penn Highland Community College Richland Campus was on lockdown for some time due to this incident. The Richland Area School District was also placed on lockdown Thursday morning, but that was lifted before noon.

Richland School District Superintendent Thomas P. Fleming said school operations went on as normal and administrators were assured by Richland police that there is no threat to the school district. Fleming issued the following statement:

"Dear Parents, Students, & Community Members,

Regarding this morning's shooting at the Richland Township Police Department. Please be assured that your students are safe. I was one of the first at the scene to learn that a lone gunman and a police officer engaged in gunfire at the rear of the Richland Township Building. That suspect was immediately apprehended. As a precaution both school buildings were placed on a lock down. When the police assured me, that they believed that gunman acted alone, they advised me to lift the lockdown, which we did. For the remainder of today we are conducting business as usual, with the exception of keeping our students indoors during lunch and recess. Please know that the safety of our students was never compromised during this event. I am proud of the way our staff and students responded during the lockdown.

Thank you for your continued support of the Richland School District."

Officials at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown also said they have been assured there is no threat at the campus, and the university is operating as normal.
