Skier hits rocks, killed at Seven Springs

By The Associated Press

CHAMPION, Pa. --

State police are investigating the death of a Pittsburgh-area skier who reportedly left a trail and hit his head on rocks at Seven Springs Mountain Resort in Somerset County.

Troopers from the Somerset barracks said 36-year-old David McClelland, of Coraopolis, was knocked unconscious and could not be revived by members of the resort's ski patrol after crashing shortly after 6 p.m. Monday. He was pronounced dead just before 7 p.m.

Before referring all questions to police Tuesday, resort spokeswoman Anna Weltz said resort officials are "deeply saddened" by the accident and their thoughts and prayers go out to the victim's family.

Witnesses told police McClelland was skiing very fast when he left a slope and went into a wooded, rocky area. Police said they have no more information to release pending further investigation.
