Skiers find white Christmas at Seven Springs

By Maria Miller

SOMERSET COUNTY, Pa. —

Many people wish for a white Christmas. Obviously this year, old man winter didn't deliver. But snow lovers in the region still found a way to enjoy the fluffy white stuff on Christmas Day.

You wouldn't know it was Christmas on Sunday if it weren't for the decorations, gifts and family gatherings. The sun was out and there certainly wasn't any snow on ground, but 6 News reporter Maria Miller was able to find snow and some happy skiiers at Seven Springs.

Even on Christmas Day, many people took advantage of the warmer temperatures, the sunshine, and smaller crowds.

"It's good cause there's not that many people so it's not that crowded," said Jacqueline Pretorius, who was visiting from South Carolina. "There's not a bunch of long lines."

There were only a few hills open at Seven Springs on Sunday and there wasn't as much snow as there usually is this time of year, but that didn't stop skiers and snowboarders from hitting the slopes.

"Once all the presents are opened, it's kind of slow at grandma's house," explained Pretorius' mother, Patty.

Clint Sanson told 6 News that it was almost too warm to be out skiing.

"It's a little bit too warm, but it's cheaper," said Sanson. "It's snow and there's not much snow around."

Infact, there wasn't any snow in the region, that's why those who wanted a white Christmas knew they'd find one at Seven Springs.

"If they don't have snow, nobody has snow," said Barry Roth, a frequent skiier at Seven Springs. "They make it happen when nobody else can... If we're skiing in this weather, then I'm happy."

And while there wasn't tons of snow, there was just enough to go down the hill a few times and give the youngsters something to play in. For the out of towners though, it was more than they're used to seeing.

"We're from South Carolina," explained Patty Pretorius. "Even though this seems like pitiful snow to the locals, this is an avalanche to us... It is an absolute white out."
