TripAdvisor, a popular travel website, also reported a surge in complaints about the bloodsuckers at hotels this year. Pest experts say an infestation of bedbugs is not evidence of unclean or unsanitary conditions -- and it's clear the critters don't discriminate.

But the nighttime biters aren't confined to hotels. They've made headlines all summer for appearing in homes, hospitals and high-end clothing stores. In some areas, bedbugs have even been discovered on public transportation and movie theaters.
