Small Business Owners Celebrate Small Business Sat.

By Rich Wisniewski

CLEARFIELD COUNTY, Pa —

Small Business Saturday was first celebrated in 2010 as a way to honor those Mom and Pop stores in the community that don't always get the credit, but are certainly a big part of a town.

"You get that personal touch, you know grandma's old receipe or a toy that someone hasn't seen in a while, it's all available as opposed to say a big store with a prepackaged toy," said Joan Hockman, from Hockman Candy, in downtown DuBois.

Hockman appreciates Small Business Saturday, because it not only is a big boost for her store, but it also brings people to that hometown feel of a small business.

"You get that friendly home feel when people come in to talk to you," she said.

Other small business workers agree.

" I think they get more one on one and a more personal experience in a small business. I mean if you walk into a bigger store you might not get that attention," said Robin Filler, a manager from Miller Brothers Furniture in Punxsutawney, which has been in business for 43 years.

Both women agree that not only does a small business provide great customer service, but it can also do wonders for the local economy.

And having a day like Small Business Saturday, it's a great compliment during one of the busiest shopping periods of the year.
