Snow Banks Create Driving Hazards In Blair County

With roughly 17 inches of snow already on the ground in Tyrone and more on the way, snow banks are creating another hazard for drivers already dealing with slippery streets.

More than 48 hours after the storm, many streets in Tyrone were still covered with snow early Monday.

Tyrone Highway Superintendent Jim Bywater told WJAC-TV Monday that snow banks near busy intersections are creating a hazard.

“We have trouble with a few people that are plowing on their own, I guess pushing some piles up around corners,” said Bywater. “It makes it hard for drivers to see and pull out."

Although road conditions have significantly improved since the weekend storm, a WJAC-TV crew still spotted several drivers sliding past stop signs and two vehicles stuck on covered side streets.

“Slowdown when we get a good, heavy snow like that,” said Bywater. “People should try and get their cars out a little earlier so we can get the streets plowed back to the curb.”

Local officials are urging Tyrone residents to clear sidewalks in front of their homes, shovel out buried fire hydrants and pay attention to any parking rules that may go into effect with this week’s expected winter weather.
