Snow Totals Down, Business Up At Centre County Ski Mountain

BOALSBURG, Pa. —

Workers at a popular ski mountain in the eastern Alleghenies said that business is brisk, despite the limited amount of snow that has fallen so far this season.

“We’re in great shape. All of our runs are open, all of our lifts are open,” said Tussey Mountain business manager Fred Wilson. “We’ve had a tremendous amount of business already.”

Compared to snowfall totals at ski resorts in the Laurel Highlands, Wilson told WJAC-TV that nearly all of the snow on the slopes was made with snow guns.

“Because we depend so much on making the snow, we added a new air compressor, a 250 horsepower that boosts our capability up to almost 30 percent so we can make our snow quicker,” said Wilson.

The High family said they were disappointed that the latest storm that battered the East Coast didn’t dump any snow in Happy Valley.

“We wish we had that snow that went to Philadelphia,” said Phyllis High.

“We're also cross-country skiers and you can't do that when there's no natural snow,” added Pete High.

Snowboarder Anthony Zelensky told WJAC-TV that the lack of natural snow hasn’t affected conditions on the trails.

“It’s pretty cold and windy. They have the snow (guns) on and it’s cold,” said Zelensky. “Wish we could get some more.”

Tussey Mountain employees said that they are looking forward to the brief warmup in the Severe Weather Team 6 forecast, but are keeping a close eye on rainy conditions, which could damper skiing conditions.

“The weather has been holding on, the temperatures for making snow have been excellent,” said Wilson. “The warmup that we see coming is just going to be an enjoyable time for our customers to come out, dress a little lighter, enjoy the day.”
