SOMERSET, Pa. —
While construction is under way at the Flight 93 the crash site, local businesses are preparing, too. Somerset County businesses have already gotten a boost from tourists who travel there to visit the site, but now there's a new effort to make sure they maximize every opportunity to make a profit.
"I've seen people from Detroit, New York City, as far down south as like Georgia -- all over," said Noah Cramer, a baker at Frank's Pizza, which is a few miles from the crash site.
Though businesses like the pizza parlor eagerly open their doors to cater to visitors, Cramer said, "It's unfortunate that that's why there are tourists here, but for our local and regional economy, that's going to be good."
This Sept. 11, the National Park Service is estimating more than 350,000 tourists will descend on the town, and they're telling the business community to be prepared for the masses.
Ron Aldom, executive director of the Chamber of Commerce said, "From that point on, we expect a constant run of people coming from everywhere."
In response, the chamber has teamed up with Allegheny College of Maryland to help host classes to get business owners all on board by improving management, customer service, signage and more.
"When people come, we have to provide services. They're here. They're going to eat, they're going to shop, they're going to get gas," Aldom said.
He said the community also wants to make sure visitors come back.
The first seminar is May 19 and other classes will be held throughout June. To sign up, call the Somerset County campus of Allegheny College of Maryland at 814-445-9848.
