Somerset County Man Charged With Assaulting Infant

A Somerset County man was charged after accusations he assaulted an 11-day-old baby.

The infant, who is now 5 weeks old, spent the last four weeks suffering from fractures in several different areas of his body.

Jeremy James Smith was arraigned Thursday on assault charges.

Police said the incident happened on Jan. 1. The baby's grandmother, Mary St. Clair was watching the baby and two other of her grandchildren. She said Smith, whom she is dating, punched, kicked and pushed her to the ground as she was holding the baby.

Smite was arrested on Jan. 1, but St. Clair said she never told anyone what happened, including the baby's parents.

The infant is being treated at Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh with multiple fractures, according to the criminal complaint.
