Somerset County Woman Murdered

SOMERSET, Pa. —

Somerset Borough police say a woman was murdered by her boyfriend in the early morning hours of Saturday.

Police say 19-year-old Bruce Emerick shot and killed his girlfriend, Jeanine Downing, after the two argued and then struggled with a rifle at their Laurel Village apartments. Witnesses tell police Emerick had the gun in his hands. They say Downing then grabbed the barrel and pulled it towards her, telling Emerick to shoot her if he wanted her to die. Police say that's when the gun went off, hitting Downing in the face, killing her. Witnesses say her hands never left the barrel, but Emerick's were on the trigger.

Emerick is in police custody and faces criminal homicide charges.
